This course will cover the basic methodology and ideology of Traditional Western Herbalism (TWH), which comes out of the tradition of Vitalism and is based in the actions of herbs. We will discuss the relevant parts of the history of western medicine and philosophy of science to gain a better understanding for what TWH is, why it was superseded by modern medicine, and why it is making a comeback in our contemporary world. We will also cover some of the basic tools that TWH practitioners use to determine treatment schedules, and how to determine what herbs should be tried for which ailments. This is a basic level class, and no prior knowledge of herbalism is needed. By the end of the class, participants should have a sufficient grounding in TWH to begin their own study of this rich practice. Making herbal preparations (e.g., tinctures, salves, creams, etc.) and application methods will NOT be covered. Instructor: Robyn Morton, associate director of White Violet Center for Eco-Justice.
